The marine fauna of Lanzarote
The temperate waters are home to more than 500 species, around 10% of which are endemic to Lanzarote. Global tourism is putting certain species in critical danger, such as the angel shark, a cousin of the ray, which is completely harmless and, if left alone by divers, will come and bask on the sandy bottom near the shore. Some are not very shy (peacock wrasse, cuttlefish), others play hide and seek with divers (seahorses)… and the diver becomes a tourist who can observe different species in their habitat: sandy bottoms, rocks, close to the surface (barracudas), hidden in nooks and crannies (moray eels), grazing on seaweed on the drop-offs, hidden in caves (shrimps)…
